As every League of Legends fan who has tried to the game in the past week has been made painfully aware of, the Riot servers have taken a trip to the land of broken hardware and infinite queues. Between the servers just being flat out crashed to players having to wait a gross amount of time in a login queue, this has not been a good week to be a League fan.
Tired of seeing this? Me too.
But there is hope, players.
Riot, as does every company in a crisis, claims to be working around the clock to see where these problems stemmed (protip: their patch,) and to do their best to get the game back to a point where someone can simply log on and play. And it seems to me as if they are making actual progress towards fixing this as opposed to just claiming it. As of this writing, the servers have been up a solid 30 hours and seem to be running smoothly, albeit the queue is still huge. (Expect at least an hour wait time to even log in.)
On top of what is approaching the image of some stability, Riot updated players with a somewhat detailed explanation of what actually happened. The person in charge of maintaining the server health himself, CaptSturm, updated players in a forum post. He noted that among the complaints players have made – extended outages of the North American game server, huge queue times to even long in, and a loss of in-game content for a certain handful of unlucky players – and then went on to apologize for what players are having to go through.

Soon, you won’t have to be this guy…
And in this note we league players finally were made aware to what has been going on with the servers: The recent patch that seemingly caused the issues did in fact ‘break’ the server. The unmentioned changes that this patch made to the inner-mechanics of league introduced a new choke point for the server data to be forced through, and it simply did not allow enough data to be processed in enough time to keep the server afloat.
Riot has made what appears to be a hotfix by swapping some hardware around, and as they play with differing configurations the server either goes up or down, explaining the random downtimes the game has been going through in between full on crashes. As said, as of this writing the server has been up around 30 hours for me personally and has had very little lag. Maybe there is a chance of returning the game to how it was pre-monster patch, where players didn’t have to wait to login.
But for now, Sturm makes sure to remind players that Riot does not have a timeframe for when the game will be 100% stable again but wants them to know they will continue to monitor progress until they are one hundred percent sure that what they have done is a true fix.
